Free Gun Locks Available

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office has received a limited number of firearm safety kits for distribution to local residents through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program. The safety kits, which include a gun lock, will be distributed from the Sheriff's Office in the Cherokee County Law Enforcement Center. The kits are available now and distribution will continue until all kits have been distributed.

We strongly encourage all residents to come by the Sheriff's Office and pick up a Project ChildSafe safety kit so they can securely and properly store their firearm. Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The locks will fit on most types of handguns, rifles, and shotguns. The goal of this program is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in your home. We are glad to be participating in a growing national effort to promote firearms safety education to all gun owners and hope that all firearm owners fully understand their responsibilities with respect to the safe handling and storage of firearms.

Other law enforcement agencies in Cherokee County are also distributing gun locks through this partnership and may be contacted for further information on their specific distribution plans.
