Two persons shot in drug deal gone bad

 

One subject was shot and killed and another wounded in what deputies believe was a drug deal gone bad.

The incident occurred at 1:30am on Vaughn Rd. near Luther Vaughn school. One subject was transported to Spartanburg Regional by helicopter were he died from a gunshot wound. The coroner has not released his name pending family notification.

A second subject who was shot and wounded was transported to Upstate Carolina Medical Center and admitted. His name is Michael Dale Bowen, age 32, from 348 Crow Rd. in Earl N.C.

Both victims were in a vehicle together on Vaughn Rd. when another vehicle pulled beside their car and shots were fired.

The two wounded victims drove to the Gaffney Inn and called 911.

The suspect vehicle left the scene with three occupants. A deputy spotted the vehicle on Bonner Lake and made a traffic stop. All three suspects fled on foot. One subject was arrested at the car on Bonner Lake Rd. The other two subjects escaped on foot.

Detective Tim Clark has charged Lindon Merrill Bailey of 421 Sarratt Ave. Gaffney, with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill. Detectives charged Joseph E. Smith of 430 Sarratt St. with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill. Detectives have also charged James Robert Peterson of 317 Scruggs Trail with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill and using a vehicle without owner's consent. 

All suspects are being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
